How Often Should You Get Your Car Professionally Detailed?

Mobile Car Detailing

One of the questions we hear regularly at Ryan’s Mobile Car Detailing is: “How often should I get my car professionally detailed?”

The honest answer is that there isn’t one fixed schedule that works for every vehicle.

It depends on the condition of your car, how often you drive it, where you park it, what it is exposed to and what you are trying to achieve.

A car that is driven every day and parked outside will have very different detailing needs from a weekend car that spends most of its time in a garage.

After years of detailing vehicles across Melbourne’s South East, we’ve found that regular maintenance is one of the best ways to keep a car looking good and prevent small problems from becoming expensive paint damage.

How Often Should You Detail Your Car?

For a well-maintained vehicle, we generally recommend looking at professional detailing approximately every three months as a starting point.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you need a full detail every three months.

Sometimes your vehicle may only need a maintenance detail, while another vehicle may require paint decontamination, interior treatment, cut and polish or additional protection.

The important thing is to assess the condition of the vehicle rather than simply following a calendar.

A more intensive cut and polish with a full detail may only be necessary every couple of years, depending on the condition of the paint and how the vehicle has been maintained.

At Ryan’s, we don’t believe every vehicle should automatically receive the same treatment. The paint condition, existing defects and the owner’s expectations all need to be considered before deciding what the car actually needs.

Don’t Wait Until Your Car Looks Dirty

One of the biggest mistakes we see is waiting until a vehicle looks extremely dirty before doing anything about it.

Your paint can be contaminated even when the car doesn’t look particularly bad from a distance.

Road grime, brake dust, industrial fallout, tree sap, bird droppings and other contaminants can gradually build up on the paint.

Over time, some of these contaminants can become difficult to remove safely and may cause permanent damage or etching to the clear coat.

This is why regular maintenance matters.

It’s much easier to maintain a well-protected vehicle than to try to restore paint that has already been badly affected.

Bird Droppings and Tree Sap Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Bird droppings are one of the contaminants we recommend removing as soon as possible.

When bird droppings remain on the paint, particularly during hot or sunny conditions, they can etch into the clear coat.

Tree sap can create a similar problem.

The important thing is not to wait for your next professional detail if you notice these contaminants on your vehicle. Deal with them as soon as possible using a safe cleaning method.

The longer aggressive contamination remains on the paint, the greater the risk of permanent marks.

How Often Should You Wash Your Car?

Professional detailing and regular car washing are two different things.

You don’t need a professional detail every week, but your car does need regular washing.

For many daily-driven vehicles, weekly washing is a good maintenance habit, particularly if the vehicle is regularly exposed to Melbourne’s weather, road grime, dust and other environmental contamination.

Regular washing helps prevent contaminants from building up between professional detailing appointments.

A simple way to think about it is:

Washing maintains your vehicle. Detailing restores, deep-cleans and protects it.

If you continually leave the car dirty for weeks or months, you’re making the eventual detailing process more difficult and potentially allowing contamination to affect the paint.

Your Clear Coat Needs Protection

The clear coat is the transparent protective layer over your vehicle’s paint, and it takes a lot of abuse.

Sunlight, rain, road contamination, bird droppings, tree sap and industrial fallout can all affect the condition of the paint system over time.

This is why protecting the clear coat is just as important as cleaning it.

In our experience, we recommend maintaining some form of paint protection rather than allowing the vehicle to remain completely unprotected.

Depending on the product used, protection may need to be renewed every few months, while longer-lasting sealants and ceramic coatings can provide protection for considerably longer.

The exact maintenance schedule should always depend on the product being used and the conditions the vehicle is exposed to.

What About the Interior?

Professional detailing isn’t just about making the outside of your car shiny.

The interior needs regular attention as well.

Leather should be cleaned and appropriately protected. Fabric surfaces can also benefit from suitable protection, particularly in vehicles that experience heavy daily use.

We also pay attention to the condition of interior trims.

If plastic or other trim surfaces become dull or start showing signs of deterioration, restoration and protection can help improve their appearance and maintain the overall condition of the interior.

This becomes particularly important if you want to preserve the value and presentation of your vehicle over several years. If you want the inside and outside covered in one visit, our interior detail with exterior wash and wax is designed for exactly that.

Which Cars Need More Frequent Detailing?

Some vehicles naturally need more frequent maintenance.

For example, you may need to pay closer attention to your vehicle if it is regularly:

  • Parked outside
  • Exposed to strong sunlight
  • Driven in heavy rain
  • Used around industrial areas
  • Driven near the coast
  • Exposed to road dust and grime
  • Parked underneath trees
  • Used as a daily driver
  • Carrying children, pets or passengers frequently

Melbourne’s weather can be unpredictable, and your vehicle is constantly exposed to environmental conditions.

If your car spends most of its time outside, you should generally expect to do more maintenance than someone who keeps their vehicle in a garage.

A Real Example We Have Seen

One of the things that stands out from our experience is how quickly contamination can build up when a vehicle isn’t maintained.

We’ve had customers who hadn’t washed their vehicle for two or three months.

By the time the vehicle came to us, it wasn’t just a matter of making the car look cleaner.

There was significant contamination across the exterior, including bird droppings, brake dust and other road contamination.

In some cases, leaving contamination on the paint for too long can contribute to clear-coat damage.

Once the clear coat has been permanently damaged, you can’t always bring the paint completely back to the condition it was in when the vehicle left the factory.

That’s why prevention is so important.

It’s much better to spend a little time maintaining the vehicle than to wait until the paint requires significant correction.

When Does Your Car Need a Cut and Polish?

A cut and polish, often referred to as paint correction, is different from a normal detail.

The process uses abrasive compounds to carefully level imperfections in the clear coat and improve the appearance of the paint.

At Ryan’s, our cut and polish process includes exterior washing, bug and tar removal, clay treatment to remove contamination, paint correction, paint protection, window cleaning, plastic dressing and wheel and tyre treatment.

However, a cut and polish shouldn’t simply be performed because a certain amount of time has passed.

Every vehicle is different.

The condition of the paint, the depth of scratches and swirl marks, previous polishing work and the amount of clear coat available all matter.

If your paint is already in good condition, unnecessary polishing isn’t the answer.

The goal should always be to achieve the improvement you need while preserving as much of the original clear coat as possible. Where the paint needs less aggressive work, a full detail with machine polish is often the better option.

Is Ceramic Coating Worth Considering?

If your priority is long-term paint protection, ceramic coating may be worth considering.

A professional ceramic coating provides a durable protective layer over the vehicle’s paint and can make ongoing maintenance easier.

However, ceramic coating isn’t a magic shield and it doesn’t mean you can stop washing your car.

The condition of the paint underneath the coating is also extremely important.

At Ryan’s, our ceramic coating process includes paint inspection, deep washing and decontamination, paint correction where required, panel preparation, coating application and curing.

The coating systems we currently use have different durability periods depending on the product and package, including options with warranties of 2, 5 and 10 years.

The right coating depends on the vehicle, its age, how it is used and the level of protection the owner is looking for.

A Simple Car Detailing Schedule

While every vehicle is different, the following can be a useful starting point:

  • Every week: Wash your vehicle when necessary to remove everyday dirt and contamination.
  • Every 3 months: Consider a professional maintenance detail and inspect the condition of your paint protection.
  • Every 6–12 months: Check whether your existing sealant or other paint protection needs to be renewed, depending on the product and its condition.
  • Every couple of years: Assess whether your paint needs a more intensive correction or cut and polish. Don’t do this automatically if the paint doesn’t require it.
  • For ceramic-coated vehicles: Follow the maintenance and aftercare recommendations for the specific coating installed on your vehicle.

Don’t Wait Until the Damage Is Already There

The biggest lesson we’ve learned from detailing cars is that prevention is easier than correction.

A little regular maintenance can go a long way.

Washing the car regularly, removing bird droppings and tree sap quickly, maintaining the clear-coat protection and having the vehicle professionally inspected from time to time can help preserve the paint and interior for longer.

You don’t necessarily need the most expensive detailing package every few months.

You need the right service for the condition of your vehicle.
